Dermabrasion for skin rejuvenation
What is dermabrasion?
Dermabrasion is a method that removes your old skin and when your skin is healing it will cover the removed parts with new and younger skin. In this method doctors use a device that has repetitive rotating movements. These movements continue as long as they remove all the scarred or wrinkled skin and after that you might have swollen skin in the places that dermabrasion had been done.
The procedure is usually painless because doctors first numb your face. If your treatment might take a long time, you can also use sedatives or doctors use anesthesia. Don’t worry about your swollen red skin. It goes away within the next three months.
Why can some people receive dermabrasion treatment?
First of all, before making a decision you should consult with your dermatologist. As said above there are many other ways to rejuvenate your skin and after talking to your dermatologist, you may find other ways easier or more suited to your condition.

What are the risks?
So now imagine that your dermatologist says that the best suited method for treating your skin is dermabrasion. So you make up your mind and decide to go through with it. But what are the risks? What could go wrong during dermabrasion or after it?
Here are some of the risks you may experience:
After the surgery you might suffer from skin redness. But it goes away within the next three months.
After dermabrasion it’s normal to see acne breakouts. This type of acne usually goes away itself and doesn’t need treatment.
From time to time dermabrasion can cause darker or lighter skin tone. This might go away or be permanent.
Because your skin is swollen, your pores might enlarge automatically.
If dermabrasion is being done very deeply it can cause scars on your skin. But remember that this happens rarely.
Dermabrasion can cause bacterial infections. This too happens rarely.
If your doctor uses anesthesia on you, you might show allergic reactions to it. You may also develop allergic rashes or skin reactions.
How is it done?
Getting dermabrasion treatment has its own procedure. You should be ready for physical examination, a review of your medical history and talking about your expectations. Your doctor might need you to do a list of things such as:
- No smoking
- You should stop using certain medication
- No more unprotected sun exposure
- Ask somebody to take you home afterwards
- Botox injections
- You should take oral antibiotics
- Taking antiviral medication
Dermabrasion can be placed in one session or multiple sessions based on what kind of scar you want to treat. If you have a large scar or the amount of skin you want to treat is big, dermabrasion usually can take a long time to finish. In one session, dermabrasion usually takes from one minute to an hour.
After the procedure, doctors put a moist dressing on top of your skin and let it heal. While you’re healing it’s normal to experience swollen skin, itchy skin, redness, burning and tingling.
Remember if you feel pain while you’re being healed you can talk to your doctor and use medication such as aspirin and ibuprofen based on what your doctor says. Your doctor knows your condition the best and prescribes you with the medication that is most suited for you.
What results should you expect?
Remember that dermabrasion results are not permanent so if you see a result that you don’t like, talk to your doctor and also wait until your skin is completely healed. Side effects are not usually permanent and go away on their own.
It’s normal to have swollen, red skin. During the next few weeks your skin becomes better and better and the redness turns into a pinkness. Usually it takes three months for the treated skin to go back to its normal color.
If there’s a change in your skin tone, and your skin color has become lighter or darker, contact your doctor. Your doctor can prescribe you with the right medication.
