Seeing blood in your semen might be really terrifying, but don’t worry usually there is nothing dangerous about seeing blood in your semen and it would disappear by itself after some time. Of course if you’re above 40 years old the chances that something serious has happened is more.

Color of the blood in your semen might differ from a brownish color to pink. Usually blood in semen is alongside some other symptoms such as blood in urine, tenderness in your groin area, painful urinating, painful ejaculation, painful lower back and swollen scrotum.

What causes blood in semen?

1 – infection

In most cases infection is the real reason behind blood in your sement. Glands and tubes that help move your semen might be infected and therefore you would see blood in your semen. 

2 – You’re suffering from Chlamydia trachomatis

These causes include schistosomiasis, tuberculosis, amyloidosis, warfarin side effects, high blood pressure and testicular cancer.

When is it serious?

Studies have shown that men who are older than 40 years old face a higher risk of prostate cancer. If you are over 40 years old and you see blood in your semen you should contact your doctor right away. But if you are younger than 40 years old and there is blood in your semen you can wait for some time. If you didn’t develop any other symptoms and after a few days it stopped, then there is nothing to worry about. 

If blood in your semen continued to show up and you developed further symptoms, please contact your doctor and ask for further instruction and guidance. 

How is the reason diagnosed?

There different methods to diagnose the reason behind blood in your semen. Your doctor based on your age, other symptoms, the color of blood, amount of blood, medical history and some other factors chooses the right method for you.

How to treat it?

If the cause of blood in your semen is nothing serious you can just stay at home. Rest and allow your body to have some time to deal with the problem and heal itself. Don’t be stressed out and spend a few days relaxed. 

But if your condition is more serious, your doctor would prescribe some antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medication to help your body recover and destroy the infection. In more serious cases your doctor would determine how to cure you and what methods to use.
